Sixteen Agencies Awarded Health Grants Totaling More Than $3 Million

St. Louis, May 21 - The Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) has awarded sixteen new grants totaling more than $3 million to agencies across the state. Each grant addresses an important health need in the urban and rural communities these agencies serve.

"These grants represent diverse health issues facing the citizens of Missouri. The foundation is pleased to assist these worthy agencies that are providing needed health services and important prevention programs for the uninsured, underinsured and underserved in the state," said Dr. James Kimmey, president and CEO of MFH.

Grant awards include the following:

South Central Public Health Services Group, West Plains, Mo.
Grant Amount: $224,537
Project: This 3-year grant entitled Multi-County Women's Health Enhancement Initiative will provide free comprehensive family planning services to women in an 8-county area.
Region Served: Douglas, Howell, Oregon, Ozark, Ripley, Shannon, Texas and Wright counties.

McDonald County Dental Coalition, Lanagan, Mo.
Grant Amount: $76,099
Project: This rural dental coalition will use the grant funds to help replace an outdated x-ray machine and processor, purchase other dental equipment and develop outreach services to children.

Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments, St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $111,748
Project: Pediatric Therapy Services for Children with Visual Impairments is the title of an 18-month grant that will provide funds for training new and current staff related to the specialized needs of infants and toddlers with visual impairments.
Region Served: St. Louis City and Lincoln, Warren, St. Charles, Franklin, St. Louis, Jefferson and Montgomery counties.

Community Health-In-Partnership Services (CHIPS), St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $224,721
Project: Integration of Mental Health and Complementary Medicine into a Community-Based Primary Healthcare Model is the program under which CHIPS will use the 3-year grant to expand its mental illness prevention, assessment and treatment services.

Lydia's House, Inc., St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $450,000
Project: Lydia's House Transitional Housing and Support Services Expansion Grant will help provide a new facility to serve an increased number of abused women and their children. Through the grant families will be receive transitional housing and support services including on-site daycare.

Region Served: St. Louis City and Lincoln, Warren, St. Charles, Franklin, St. Louis and Jefferson counties.

A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, Kirksville, Mo.
Grant Amount: $370,185
Project: Healthy Lifestyles, Healthy Lives: Cardiovascular/ Diabetes Prevention and Self-Management Outreach is the name of this 3-year grant. Its goals are to expand an existing awareness program, provide more prevention education, establish outreach teams and implement a data management system. Region Served: Linn, Schuyler, Adair, Macon, Scotland and Knox counties.

Barceda Families, Greenfield, Mo.
Grant Amount: $351,622
Project: HOPES: Healthy Outcomes through Prevention, Education and Support is a 3-year grant that will provide outreach services to Hispanic immigrants and turn a very successful pilot program into a sustainable intervention program in southwest Missouri.
Region Served: Barton, Dade and Cedar counties.

Gateway Blood Association, St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $148,145
Project: Gateway Blood Association Bloodmobile was awarded a grant to assist with the purchase of a bloodmobile to improve and extend current services. The new bloodmobile will increase the units of blood that are collected as well as provide free health screenings for all blood donors.
Region Served: St. Louis City and Lincoln, Warren, St. Charles, Franklin, St. Louis, Jefferson, Pike, Gasconade, Washington and Crawford counties.

Mental Health Association of Greater St. Louis, St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $149,875
Project: SOS (Signs of Suicide) is a 2-year grant providing suicide prevention training to Jefferson County school personnel. Under the grant, presentations will be made in 10 school districts annually. Plus the association will provide technical assistance for schools to develop crisis plans. The agency also wishes to establish a Survivors of Suicide Support Group.

Prevention Consultants of Missouri, Rolla, Mo.
Grant Amount: $125,945
Project: Healthy Kids will use grant funds to expand existing home-based nursing, education and social support services to high risk parents during pregnancy and until their child is 2 years old. In Phelps and Maries counties, these services will enhance maternal health and the health of infants and toddlers.

Older Women's League, St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $10,346
Project: A 2-year grant for Elder Abuse Victim Support (EAVS) provides funding for salaries, office space, and a public outreach campaign to increase awareness of the availability of services for elderly women trapped in abusive situations. The project includes educating older woman about domestic violence and providing support to victims through a hotline.
Region Served: St. Louis City and St. Louis, Jefferson, Franklin, Warren, Lincoln and St. Charles counties.

Friends of Reynolds County, Centerville, Mo.
Grant Amount: $223,933
Project: The Diabetes and Cardiovascular Awareness and Education Initiative was awarded a 3-year grant that will allow an RN and nutritionist to become certified diabetes educators. After the completion of training the project will offer individual and group education for those already diagnosed with diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Health screenings will also be provided under the grant.

Jamestown New Horizons, Florissant, Mo.
Grant Amount: $112,739
Project: A 2-year grant called Riding Toward Good Health will help pay for a part-time physical therapist and occupational therapist to help improve the services provided to individuals with head injuries and physical and developmental disabilities. The agency will also use funds for computer equipment and other needed office equipment.
Region Served: St. Louis City and County plus surrounding area.

Our Little Haven, St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $120,915
Project: Medical Milestones is the name of a 2-year grant that will help cover the salary of a speech pathologist and assist with other programs offered to children served by this agency.
Region Served: St. Louis City and County plus surrounding area.

Grace Hill Neighborhood Health Center, St. Louis, Mo.
Grant Amount: $149,953
Project: Improving Pharmacy Operations is the goal of this 2-year grant that will partially fund the expansion of the pharmacy team at the health center.

Community Alliance for Compassionate Care at the End of Life, Springfield, Mo.
Grant Amount: $150,000
Project: This 2-year grant entitled Building Capacity for Quality End-of-Life Care will be used to increase staff, prepare informational publications and for office space and equipment.
Region Served: Greene County plus 23 surrounding counties.

The MFH region encompasses 84 counties and the City of St. Louis. Established in January of 2000, it is the largest health care foundation in the state and one of the ten largest in the country. Its mission is to improve the health of the people in the communities it serves. The foundation will give awards in excess of $35 million to health-related efforts in 2003.
