Basic Support

Health organizations in the Missouri Foundation for Health's (MFH) service region provide a variety of preventive and direct health service programs for the uninsured, underinsured and underserved. MFH recognizes that these organizations have funding needs to support ongoing activities that meet the identified needs of a community.

The Basic Support program funds organizations that primarily provide existing direct health programs to the uninsured, underinsured and underserved within the MFH service region.

Basic Support funds can only be used for general operating expenses including existing salaries and benefits, equipment and supplies.  Funds cannot be used to develop new programs.

Basic Support Overview

BASIC SUPPORT ELIGIBILITY

(these criteria apply to the Basic Support funding program only)

Applicant organizations

          • must have a 501(c)(3) tax status and be located within the MFH Service Region.
          • must have annual expenses of $10 million or less. In-kind expenses are not considered in determining the size of an organization's annual expenses.
          • must serve the MFH target population; Missourians who are uninsured, underinsured, and underserved.
          • must spend at least two-thirds (67%) of its total annual expenses on established direct health program(s) within the MFH service region.  All program descriptions and expenses must be clearly reported on the applicant organization's most recently filed IRS Form 990, Part III, Statement of Program Service Accomplishments.
          • can only apply to the Basic Support funding program once for the 2012 funding year.
          • must not have an active Basic Support or General Support for Advocacy grant award at the time of the application deadline for this cycle. An active grant has undisbursed grant funds remaining as of the application deadline.

Organizations that are not eligible for Basic Support are those who primarily provide services such as: advocacy, after-school programs, child day care, employment assistance, financial/housing assistance, financial counseling, fund raising, independent living, non-health related long-term housing/shelter, mentoring, recreational camping, or tutoring.

GRANT AWARD LIMITS

All Basic Support grants are 24 months in length.  The start date is determined once funding decisions are made.

For eligible organizations, MFH will determine the grant award amount based on two criteria:

          • applicant organization’s size in dollars; and
          • available funding in the Basic Support program.

The amount of the grant is determined as follows:

Annual Expenses
Range of Award (Annual)*
$5 Million or Less
$37,500 - $50,000
$5 - 10 Million
$75,000 - $100,000

*The total of current MFH funding cannot exceed 25% of an organization’s annual expense budget.  All current MFH grants and contracts are considered in calculating an organization's 25% limit.  In-kind expenses are not considered in determining the size of an annual expense budget.
