Mental Health & Substance Abuse
About Us

Mental health and substance abuse disorders are serious issues affecting all ages. The facts are staggering:

-More than 80,000 Missourians have a disorder of mental illness and substance abuse.
-Fourteen percent of Missouri youth indicate they have considered suicide.
-Depression is the most common psychiatric diagnosis in older adult suicide victims, yet three-quarters of depressed older adults do not receive appropriate behavioral health treatment.

About the Program / History

MFH’s Mental Health & Substance Abuse program funds organizations that help with the emotional and physical problems associated with these disorders. MFH places high priority on funding organizations working together to tackle these issues. Since 2006, the program has awarded $15.5 million to organizations providing prevention and treatment services to youth and adults with behavioral health needs. Past grant funding addressed youth suicide, integrating treatment services for adults with co-occurring disorders, youth substance abuse prevention, community assessments and increasing access to behavioral health services for older adults.

Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) Evaluation Summary

The Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH), a center for policy and training at the University of Missouri, is the external evaluator for the COD funding program. This evaluation summary assesses each program’s capability to provide integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders; examines collaboration and service linkages of grantees; and measures organizational characteristics and external influences on best practices.
