Center for Disease Control:  National Asthma Control Program

Description:  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created its National Asthma Control Program in 1999 to help reduce the burden of asthma through effective control of the disease. The goals of the program are to reduce the number of deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, school or workdays missed, and limitations on activity due to asthma.

Description: The Guide to Community Preventive Services is a resource that provides information on programs and policies to improve health and prevent disease in communities. Systematic reviews available are used to determine effective program and policy interventions, effective interventions for different communities and information on the cost of effective interventions as well as the likely return on investment.

Merck Childhood Asthma Network

Description:  The Merck Childhood Asthma Network, Inc., (MCAN), is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization established to address the complex and growing problem of pediatric asthma in the United States. Funded by The Merck Company Foundation, the mission of MCAN is to support and advance evidence-based programs that improve the quality of life for children with asthma and their families and to reduce, through dissemination of effective interventions, the burden of the disease on them and society.

Childhood Asthma Research and Education Network

Description: The  Childhood Asthma Research and Education (CARE) Network was established in 1999 by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to evaluate treatments for children with asthma.  Over the next five years, the CARE Network will conduct several studies for children with asthma and share their findings with the health care community.

American Lung Association: Open Airways for Schools

Description: Open Airways for Schools is the American Lung Association's elementary-school education program for children with asthma. Open Airways teaches children with asthma to understand and manage their illness so they can lead more normal lives. A key part of the program is American Lung Association's facilitation of asthma-care partnerships involving school nurses and educational staff as well as physicians, families and Lung Association volunteers.

Description: The EPA established the OCHP in May 1997 to make the protection of children's health a fundamental goal of public health and environmental protection in the United States. OCHP supports and facilitates EPA efforts to protect children's health from environmental threats.
