Description: ASHA unites the many professionals working inschools who are committed to safeguarding the health of school-aged children.ASHA is a multidisciplinary organization of administrators, counselors,dentists, health educators, physical educators, school nurses and schoolphysicians which advocates for high-quality school health instruction, healthservices and a healthful school environment.

Description: NASBHC represents school-based health careproviders and supporters. The organization promotes accessible, qualityschool-based primary and mental health care for children and youth throughinterdisciplinary and collaborative efforts.

UCLA School Mental Health Project,

Description: This Center, one of two national training andtechnical assistance centers, focuses on mental health in schools. Its missionis to improve outcomes for young people by enhancing policies, programs andpractices relevant to mental health in schools. The center aims to advanceefforts to plan, implement, and evaluate school-based programs; analyze anddiscuss current programs and needs; develop new models for school-basedinterventions; and demonstrate the value of school-university collaboration todevelop and evaluate interventions.

School Based Health Services

Description: The foundation for the relationship betweenMedicaid and education was established by the Medicare Catastrophic CoverageAct (Public Law 100-360), as amended in 1988. Medicaid pays for costs ofdirect, medically necessary services provided to eligible children who havedisabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act(IDEA). Illinois has actively supported this relationship since 1992, throughthe School-Based Health Services program (SBHS).

Description: With their numbers on the rise, school-basedhealth centers are an important source of counseling and medical care forlow-income and uninsured youth. Controversy over family planning services hashad a significant impact, however, and many centers remain limited in theirability to meet the needs of sexually active teens by dispensing contraceptivesto them on-site. At the same time, a number of school-based health centers thatare committed to reducing teenage pregnancy and improving teens' reproductivehealth are working within their communities to overcome opposition to theprovision of contraceptive care—and they are meeting with some success.

Description: Established in 1980 as the Center for PopulationOptions, Advocates for Youth champions efforts that help young people makeinformed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health.
